Georgia License Plate Lookup /Inspection for Tags Renewal

Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in Georgia?

Yes, emissions testing is required for tag renewal in specific Georgia counties, but safety inspections are not mandated. Under Georgia Administrative Code 391-3-20, emissions testing requirements apply to gasoline-powered vehicles registered in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale Counties. The remaining 146 Georgia counties do not require emissions testing.

Georgia vehicle owners may complete tag renewals online, at self-service kiosks in participating counties, by mail, or in person at county tag offices. After a successful tag renewal, vehicle owners receive a validation decal to be affixed in the space provided on the license plate.

Exemptions and Special Circumstances

Several vehicle categories are exempt from emissions testing requirements in Georgia:

  • Vehicles from the three most recent model years
  • Vehicles 25 model years or older
  • Diesel-powered vehicles
  • Motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and motor homes
  • Dedicated alternative fuel vehicles operating solely on natural gas, propane, battery electricity, or hydrogen
  • Senior exemption for vehicle owners 65 years old or older meeting specific requirements
  • Out-of-area extensions for students, military personnel, or business obligations temporarily relocating outside metro Atlanta
